by Gerald and Frances Oleson in a small store on Front Street.
Gerald and Frances lived in the upstairs apartment. That building still stands, but the store eventually was replaced with a much larger one just down the street, our Long Lake location.
Gerald and Frances’ sons became involved in the business and the chain expanded to Cadillac, Manistee, Petoskey, and Charlevoix.
Don’s sons and one of Jerry’s daughters have made the stores what they are today. They have expanded and upgraded to modern stores, offering customers the best in Northern Michigan shopping and service.
Two of DJ’s sons and Brad’s daughter are a part of the 4th generation of the family involved in the stores. They are learning and growing in their careers and plan to continue the family business.
I am not smart, i am lucky. The harder you work, the luckier you are.
- Jerry Sr.
Jerry Sr. started Oleson’s to help the community and the people in it. He was dedicated to his work, often calling himself “the oldest bag boy” and “a man who only works half days, 12 hours a day”. Many reminisce of Jerry working the produce department, assisting them through the store, and being greeted with a “hello young lady/fella”.
